Transnet to gazette new rules for rail network use

JOHANNESBURG – Transnet has published its draft network statement aimed at transforming and fixing the country’s troubled railway system.
 
The draft contains rules, timelines and terms and conditions for the use of railway infrastructure by train operators.
The process will allow the private sector to participate in the industry.
The country’s rail network has been beset by cable theft, vandalism and mismanagement.
Transnet is hailing this as a critical milestone in its quest to reform the rail network.
In December, Treasury gave the parastatal R47 billion as part of the company’s recovery plan.
Transnet CEO, Michelle Phillips, believes the plan will increase exports, create jobs and grow the economy.
The draft will be gazetted soon for public comments.
